The atmosphere in the recently refurbished lounge bar of the Masonic Hall in Blackpool on the return of its members, families and friends from the Christmas festivities was one of cheerfulness and gaiety; one in which a delightful spirit of happiness prevailed. The Christmas break had, it appeared, been extraordinarily kind to many of the revelling Masons and they had arrived on New Year’s Eve to make the most of their cheeriness.
The psychedelic lighting of the lounge bar, the balloons, party poppers, streamers, blowouts, kazoos, and silly hats aided the raucous revellers in their quest for a fun-filled night. The Masonic Club that had organised the evening spared no expense in ensuring a successful event. There was entertainment in the form of DJ Derek Stocker and three excellent cabaret acts providing a diversity of popular songs. There were canapes. There were nibbles. And there was a very generous and varied buffet. Add to these ingredients the cheery and efficient service from Mel and Sarah behind the bar and it is little wonder that everyone enjoyed a first class welcoming-in of 2017.
Within moments of the arrival of the early birds, a mood of revelry and fun prevailed. Joanna Sharrock, the first of the cabaret acts, provided a programme of sing-along numbers to get the crowd in the right mind-frame for fun. Jim Forest kept the atmosphere lively with classics from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s as time marched on towards the midnight hour. The final session was reserved, however, for female vocalist Hannah Jane who brought the 80’s and 90’s alive before the chimes of Big Ben heralded in the New Year and the revellers celebrated in customary manner; warm and friendly hugs and greetings, cheering and downing of yet more stimulants.
It was a perfect end to the old year with promises of a fun-packed year to come in 2017.
